Remember to pause before clicking on a link in your emails!

Cybercriminals often create a sense of urgency and fear to trick people into acting before thinking. Messages that claim your account will be locked or that a payment is overdue are good examples of this scam. If you encounter an email like this — pause! If you aren’t expecting the message, treat it with caution, even if it looks legitimate. When in doubt, contact the sender or organization with a trusted number or directly through the website.

JOIN US IN BUILDING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE!

CALL BEFORE YOU CUT: CARING FOR RIPARIAN BUFFERS
Many creeks, lakes, and ponds in Cary are surrounded by riparian buffers. Riparian buffers are areas of natural vegetation along stream banks that help protect water quality by filtering pollutants, stabilizing soil, and supporting wildlife habitat. While certain clearing and building activities are restricted in these areas (within 50 feet of streams), property owners can still responsibly maintain them. In fact, residents can remove dead, diseased, or damaged trees (leaving the stumps), properly prune vegetation, and remove nuisance plants such as poison ivy, English ivy, bamboo, or Chinese privet. If you’re unsure whether your property includes a protected buffer or have questions about maintenance, contact Cary Stormwater through 311. When in doubt, it’s always best to call before you cut.

STAY COOL WITH SUMMER WEATHERIZATION TIPS
High temperatures have HVAC units working overtime — reduce cooling costs with these energy-efficiency tips!

  • If your HVAC system allows it, consider upgrading to a thicker pleated filter. Thicker filters have more surface area to trap dust and particles, help maintain healthy airflow through the system, and typically don’t need to be replaced as often.
  • Reducing air leaks by adding caulk or weatherstripping can help keep your AC running as temperatures rise.

HELP YOUR TREES STAY HEALTHY IN THE HEAT!

  • Know when to water! Use a lawn stake to probe the ground surrounding the furthest edge of the tree’s canopy. If you are having difficulty probing to a 6- to 8-inch depth and rainfall is not in the forecast, you should water your tree!
  • Young trees should be watered two to three times per week. Established trees can be watered every other week.
  • Deeply water your tree with a hose by walking along the canopy’s dripline, allowing one minute in each area. Using a soaker hose? Water area for two to four hours.
  • Use mulch to conserve moisture by adding a 3-inch layer, keeping a few inches away from the tree’s trunk and extending 3 feet out from the circumference. These tips will help your tree stay healthy and grow strong. These tips will help your tree stay healthy and grow strong
