PEAK HURRICANE SEASON STARTS NOW

As we enter hurricane season, now is the time to prepare for heavy rain. Here are a couple of important things to remember:

1. Keep storm drains clear. Help reduce localized flooding by clearing leaves and debris from storm drains near your home (when it’s safe to do so), and report blocked drains in the public right-of-way through Cary 311.
2. Closing your pool or hot tub for the season? Chlorinated water must be fully dechlorinated before draining, and saltwater must soak into the ground — never into a storm drain or waterway.

PUMPKIN FLOTILLA AT BOND PARK

Join us as dozens of carved jack-o’-lanterns take to the water, floating across Bond Lake in a one-of-a-kind Halloween spectacle. Enjoy live music, tasty snacks, and family-friendly fun. Drop off your carved pumpkin on Thursday, October 22, to have it included in the flotilla. The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation (NSAF), with support from Nike, are excited to host the 2026 Great American XC Festival presented by COROS. Now in its 27th year, this premier interstate cross-country competition returns to the lightning-fast course at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary — site of the Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) Southeast and NCISAA Cross Country Championships. carync.gov/wmsp

FROM CARVED TO COMPOST
The creativity on display at the Pumpkin Flotilla doesn’t have to end when the pumpkins leave the water — Cary composts the pumpkins after the event, giving them a new purpose instead of sending them to the landfill. You can keep that same spirit going at home by learning backyard composting, using Food Waste Drop-off services, and discovering simple ways to keep valuable materials out of the landfill and support Cary’s waste diversion efforts.
