The Town of Cary is proud to partner with Scouts to complete projects that help them build skills and make meaningful contributions to the environment. Scouts in Scouts BSA and Girls Scouts North Carolinas Coastal Pines are a valuable source of leaders, volunteers, and stewardship of our community and natural resources. By donating time, servant leadership, and enthusiasm, youth contribute to our community through opportunities geared toward Scouts and Scouters.

Servant Leadership is an attitude. It’s a leadership philosophy focused on serving a group or organization and supporting its ability to thrive and grow. Scouts in both Girl Scouts and Scout BSA have opportunities to give back to their community, support others in their troop or unit, model leadership among their peers, learn new skills, engage in the community, learn about their local government, and create a legacy. It is a win-win opportunity and partnership with the Town of Cary, our Scouts, and our Community.

How Scouts Can Get Involved

Ongoing Service Opportunities

Volunteers are a key part of the environmental program at the Town of Cary. We invite Scouts to participate in one or more of our ongoing environmental volunteering opportunities, such as signing up for a litter sweep through the Spruce program, attending a community workday at Good Hope Farm, or becoming part of the Adopt a Spot program.

The Town of Cary supports Scouts in working toward Community Service Bars, Badges, and Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards, as well as Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star Scout, and Life Scout.

Scout Projects

We have worked with many Scouts working toward their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award Projects as well as Eagle Scout Projects. If you are a Scout looking to complete one of these projects, please contact Tracey.Filomena@townofcary.org.

Things to Consider for an Eagle or Gold Award Project:

• What are your interests? 
• What Merit Badges or Journeys have you enjoyed the most? Least?
• Do you have an idea for something you'd like to do that benefits our community?
• What is the goal for the completion date? Your project may take 6 months or more to complete.
• How do you plan to raise money for the project?
• The Town of Cary has little to no funds to support Scout Projects. The expectation is that Scouts fund their projects through Scouts, family, friends, and fundraisers, in accordance with the requirements of their respective Scouting organization.
• The Town of Cary reserves the right to terminate the scout project at any time, for any reason. The Scout and Adult Advisors understand that Scout Projects may or may not be maintained and may be removed or changed after completion, as needed by the Town at any time.

Examples of past and present Scout projects:

• Building and installing a vermicompost bin at the Compost Education Center
• Building and installing owl boxes at Good Hope Farm
• Developing a database to track theatre stage sets and props for Cary Arts Center
• Building raised beds to support a community garden in conjunction with Project Phoenix
• Building large wooden benches for our newest Disc Golf Course
• Creating an interpretive trail at Good Hope Farm
• Storage shelves in our facilities
• Assisting with or hosting a special event or class
