Matthew Gronke

2025_Matthew GronkeA Cary resident since 1992, Matthew Gronke exemplifies what it means to give back to Cary. As founder of the Cary Free Bicycle Project, a not-for-profit initiative that has provided more than 250 bicycles at no cost to local residents, Gronke helps people access transportation, recreation, and joy. His community presence extends to Town events like the Cary Children’s Festival and the Carolina Cares Christmas event, where he shares bicycles with families in need. Gronke’s commitment to service includes volunteering as treasurer and board member of Triangle Off-Road Cyclists, supporting the maintenance of Cary’s mountain bike trails. At Laurel Park Elementary, he serves as Vice President of Fundraising for the PTA—and even dons the costume of “Lucky” the Penguin mascot. Known to many children as “Bluey,” Gronke volunteers as a costumed entertainer at the Cary Library and local nonprofit events, spreading cheer and laughter. A tireless advocate for safe bicycle infrastructure and positive civic engagement, Gronke’s leadership, energy, and creativity inspire others to take an active role in shaping a more connected and caring Cary.

Her advocacy for historic preservation has been instrumental in efforts to protect landmarks such as the Nancy Jones House and Ivey-Ellington House, as well as to honor veterans and forgotten historical figures.
