Overview
The Cary Town Council has seven members, all of whom are elected to four-year terms. Voters throughout the Town choose the mayor and two at-large representatives. Each of the other four council members is a district representative (Districts A, B, C and D) and is chosen only by voters within the district. District representatives must live in the districts they represent.

Originally developed as part of communication efforts related to redistricting at the direction of Council, the flyer has been distributed annually in 2023, 2024, and 2025. It was mailed to every address in Cary, extending beyond the reach of utility bill communications, which are limited to residents receiving Town utility services. Each year, a vendor was engaged to support address acquisition, printing, folding, mailing supplies, and processing for this project.
Redistricting
The Cary Town Council completed redistricting activities, including a public hearing, by adopting a new map of municipal electoral district boundaries at their regular meeting on November, 2021. These boundaries went into immediate effect.
N.C. law allows municipalities to redistrict at any point they deem appropriate, but no less than once every 10 years following each nationwide census. In April 2020, Cary's estimated population was 168,874 citizens - making the ideal average population for each of Cary's four districts 42,218. Prior to 2021, the last Cary redistricting occurred in 2011. Learn more about redistricting.
Elections
On August 22, 2024, Council adopted an ordinance changing Cary’s method of election to the plurality method. With no citizen petitions requesting a referendum on this change, the change is effective for the 2025 election cycle.
