Sewer Rehab and Replacement Program
The Town's sewer system protects public health and safeguards the environment by providing dependable wastewater collection. Throughout the year, we maintain and inspect sewer lines and manholes to identify and repair defects before problems occur. Cary annually budgets funds to renew aging sections of this critical infrastructure to reduce the risk of disruptive and costly emergency repairs. This work extends the service life of these assets by at least 50 years.
2024-25 Sewer Rehabilitation Project
In the fall of 2024, work will get underway to rehabilitate sewer lines and manholes in four locations within Cary’s wastewater collection system, as described below. Sewer line rehabilitation will be accomplished primarily by the installation of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liners, a “trenchless” method of upgrading sewer lines that Cary has used successfully for over 20 years.
Brier Creek Interceptor
Over the last couple years, Cary’s sewer rehabilitation program upgraded the large diameter sewer lines (often referred to as “interceptor sewers”) along the east side of Lake Crabtree along the Crabtree Creek and Black Creek Greenway Corridors. Following the successful completion of that project, we are focusing our efforts on the large sewer pipeline along the west side of Lake Crabtree. This portion of the project will upgrade 1.5 miles of 36-inch and 42-inch pipe and is expected to take one year to complete. This work will be completed in two phases, split at Aviation Parkway. This critical sewer pipeline serves a significant portion of the Airport and Aviation Parkway corridors in Morrisville, site developments along McCrimmon Parkway, commercial and industrial sites adjacent to the west side of Lake Crabtree and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
McCrimmon Corners
Work in the McCrimmon Corners area, near the intersection of Davis Drive and McCrimmon Parkway, involves rehabilitation approximately 2,000 feet of corroded ductile iron sewers along Madison Heights Way. A portion of this work will be completed at night to minimize impacts to businesses and their customers.
Lochmere Drive Area
The Lochmere Subdivision includes three lakes. Two of these lakes – Lake Lochmere and Lake Lomond have sewer lines crossing through the dams. This project will rehabilitate 1400 feet of 8-inch and 12-inch sewer lines to maintain the structural integrity of sewer system infrastructure within and adjacent to the dam at Lake Lomond (the smaller of the two lakes adjacent to Lochmere Drive). Sewer lines in the vicinity of the Lake Lochmere Dam (a.k.a. " the big lake") were previously rehabilitated under a recent project.
Cary Towne Boulevard
The sewer line along Cary Towne Boulevard adjacent to the former Cary Towne Center property receives flow from multiple businesses west of SE Maynard Road as well as the Esat Cary Magnet Middle School and the Henry Adams Elementary School. Rehabilitation of this sewer line is imperative to providing reliable sewer service.
This project is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024. The overall project is expected to take 1.5 years to complete.
November 2025 Update:
- Brier Creek Interceptor
Crews have completed Phase 2 Sewer Interceptor Rehabilitation Project (click on the Locations tab to see the map of the Brier Creek Interceptor project phases). This phase of the project included cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner installation to renew 2200 feet of 42-inch diameter sewers and repairs to nine manholes.
Work is now focused on the third phase of the Brier Creek Interceptor Project, continuing south along the west side of Lake Crabtree to Evans Road. Phase 3 will renew 3100 feet of 42-inch sewer and 17 manholes. A temporary above-ground pipeline will divert sewer flows around these pipes and manholes to a location downstream of the work area. This work is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2026.
- Cary Towne Boulevard
Rehabilitation of the sewer lines has been completed from just upstream of SE Maynard Road to Convention Drive. Work on the manholes will be completed over the next several months.
Work on the sewer lines east of Convention Drive has been removed from the project. These sewer line segments will be replaced with larger diameter pipes on an upcoming sewer replacement project.
- Lochmere Drive Area
The planned improvements in this area (at Lake Lomond Dam) have been completed.
-
McCrimmon Corners Area
The planned improvements in this area have been complete.
May 2025: Work is complete for the first phase (see the map under the Locations heading) of the Brier Creek Interceptor, which saw the renewal of a half mile of 36 and 42-inch gravity sewer upstream (west) of Aviation Parkway. In addition, new manhole frames and covers were installed and the interior of the manholes were coated with a special corrosion-resistant mortar lining.
Phase 2 is scheduled to get underway the week of May 27, which will continue rehabilitation of the 42-inch sewer outfall along the west side of Lake Crabtree in the vicinity of Aviation Parkway. The first step will involve the installation of temporary pumps and piping along Aviation Parkway behind the guardrail on each side to redirect sewer flows away from the pipes and manholes being worked on. Due to daytime traffic volumes on Aviation Parkway, this work will be performed at night with traffic reduced to a single lane. Appropriate traffic control signage will be in place and flaggers will be employed to direct traffic through the work zone with assistance from law enforcement personnel. This phase is scheduled to be completed this summer.
The third and final phase of sewer rehabilitation on the Brier Creek Interceptor is scheduled to be completed by late fall of 2025.
Rehabilitation of sewer lines at Lochmere Drive and Lake Lomond (the smaller lake in Lochmere Subdivision) will begin the week of May 19th. During construction, the bicycle lane adjacent to the westbound driving lane will be closed. Motorists and bicyclists will be directed to share the road, and appropriate work zone traffic control signage will be in place. Paved walking trails within the work area will also be closed for the duration of the project.
This work is expected to take approximately one month to complete.
February 2025: SAK Construction Crews have begun work to rehabilitate the Brier Creek Sewer Interceptor. The first phase of this project will focus on renewing pipe and manholes upstream (west) of Aviation Parkway. Over the past two months, workers have installed silt fence, temporary construction entrances and special construction matting to support trucks and equipment in the sewer easement. A temporary sewer bypass system, including pumps and above-ground pipes is currently bine set up to manage flows.
The next steps include cleaning the sewer lines with specialized hydraulic cleaning equipment and installing cured-in-place pipe liners. This first phase of the project is scheduled to be complete by Summer 2025.
Work on the Brier Creek Interceptor is planned to be completed in three phases. The next (second) phase will rehabilitate the portion of the Brier Creek Sewer Interceptor immediately adjacent to Aviation Parkway. The third and final phase will complete rehabilitation of the Brier Creek Interceptor along the west side of Lake Crabtree between Aviation Parkway and Evans Road and is expected to be complete by winter 2026.
October 2023: The sewer rehabilitation work along the Black Creek Greenway and at the Old Reedy Creek Trailhead has been completed. Contractors are currently working to remove temporary above-ground piping and perform cleanup and restoration items along the project corridor. This work is scheduled to be completed this fall.
February 2023: The Black Creek Greenway between Dynasty Drive and North Cary Park opened to the public while rehabilitation of sewer lines and manholes took place along the Black Creek Greenway from North Cary Park to the Crabtree Creek Greenway. The trail was closed in this area with a signed detour in place to route greenway traffic around the work zone. This work is was completed later in the spring.
The final phase of the project began near the fork where the Black Creek Greenway and Crabtree Creek Greenway intersect, continuing along the Black Creek Greenway toward the trailhead at Old Reedy Creek Road. Special construction mats were placed adjacent to the Black Creek Greenway near the trailhead in preparation for sewer rehabilitation along this section of trail, which was scheduled to begin late Spring/early Summer 2023. No greenway closures were scheduled for this final portion of the project, but trail users were advised of the potential for trucks and equipment crossing the greenway at the trailhead.
August 2022: The Crabtree Creek Greenway opened to the public. Some final repair items remain, which were able to be completed without the need to have the greenway closed. We sincerely appreciate the public’s support and understanding while these important sewer upgrades were being completed along the Crabtree Creek Greenway. As of this completion, work shifted to along the Black Creek Greenway from West Dynasty Drive to North Cary Park and this portion of the Black Creek Greenway was closed for the safety of the public and construction personnel. A signed detour was in place to direct greenway traffic around the work zone.
June 2022: The first phase of the Crabtree Creek & Black Creek Sewer Rehabilitation Project approached completion. Liners were installed in the large diameter sewer line along Crabtree Lake, with manholes repaired and cleanup/restoration activities performed before reopening the Crabtree Creek Greenway.
In the next phase, contractors will focus their efforts on rehabilitation of sewer lines along the Black Creek Greenway between West Dynasty Drive and North Cary Park, which will require a closure of this section of greenway. The remaining parts of the Black Creek Greenway, including those areas between North Cary Park and the Crabtree Creek Greenway will remain open during this phase of the project.
December 2021: The contractor mobilized to the site in early November 2021. A temporary construction entrance was built off Evans Road, and temporary piping used to reroute sewer flows was assembled. Construction entrances were built at other key locations along the Crabtree Creek Greenway corridor.
August 2021: Contract has been awarded; work was scheduled to begin along Lake Crabtree the fall.
