Cary Designated As a National Silver Level Walk-Friendly Community
Walk Friendly Communities (WFC) re-designated Cary as a National Walk-Friendly Community at a Silver Level status in June 2022. The Walk-Friendly designation is based on community efforts to expand opportunities for walking and improve pedestrian safety across a wide range of programs and activities, from planning and design to outreach and law enforcement. Highlights from Cary's renewal include its robust trail system, the Sidewalk Request Program with annual funding to fill critical gaps, the ADA Transition Plan which has repaired, replaced and installed new curb ramps, the Go Cary improvements to improve first-mile / last-mile pedestrian facilities and more accomplishments. Each year the Town Council establishes a priority list of locations for annual sidewalk projects that have been requested by citizens, the Police Department, Wake County Public Schools and staff. The annual sidewalk priority list considers a number of factors including safety, use, need and feasibility. For more information on the program go to the town's Sidewalk Project page.
