Project Overview

A new traffic signal will soon be installed at the intersection of Cary Parkway and Norwell Boulevard, following a comprehensive traffic engineering study conducted by Cary and approved by the NCDOT. The study highlighted significant safety improvement potential at this intersection through the addition of a traffic signal. During the decision-making process, other safety measures were carefully evaluated to identify the most effective solution.

Funding for this project, designated as ST 3504, has been approved by the Council. The project scope includes features such as fiber connectivity to the Cary Traffic Signal Network, accessible pedestrian facilities, GIS-based emergency vehicle preemption, connected vehicle hardware, steel mast arms, and a networked pan-tilt-zoom IP camera.

Additionally, this initiative will incorporate the construction of a sidewalk on the south side of Cary Parkway, providing a direct connection between Silverrock Court and Silverridge Court. With this new sidewalk in place, the existing pedestrian crossing treatment at Silverridge Court will be removed, further enhancing pedestrian safety and connectivity.

These intersection upgrades are a much-needed addition to this heavily trafficked area. With the creation of a signalized intersection and well-marked pedestrian crossings, safety for all road users will be significantly enhanced. Once completed, the improvements will ensure efficient traffic flow and provide a safe, accessible walking environment for pedestrians.

Project Update

  • Procurement of Professional Services - Winter 2022.
  •  Cary hired Exult Engineering to perform professional services for the design of the traffic signal and sidewalk design.
  • Design has been completed.
  • Coordination/plan review with NCDOT – Completed.
  • Project bid opening June 2024 – Completed.
  • Project awarded to White Oak Construction Corp.
  • Construction begins on the sidewalk and curb in gutter August 2024.
  • Work was completed for the sidewalk, stormwater and curb and gutter December 2024.
  • Traffic Signal construction commenced May 2025 
  •  Traffic Signal construction completed and placed in operation August 2025
