2026 Prescribed Burn Season Begins

Controlled burn March 2019 at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve

KEEPING THE BLUFFS WILDFIRE SAFE

As part of its long-term fire management plan for Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, the Town of Cary will perform its annual prescribed burn at the bluffs sometime between January 2026 and April 2026 weather permitting. North Carolina State Parks will implement and supervise the burn. Cary staff will offer logistical assistance and a Cary fire truck will be present on site during the burn. While certain sections of select trails will close, the preserve will remain open and visitors are encouraged to enjoy as usual.

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is a registered State Natural Area, and the Town of Cary is bringing the necessary resources and experts to bear on continuing a prescribed fire management program focusing on fuel reduction and wildfire prevention. Burns implemented in prior years were a huge success.

Wildfires are a common threat to structures in many areas of North Carolina, especially during drought and times of high winds.  Prescribed burns are a proven and safe way to reduce fuel loads in forests and other areas. Prescribed burns at Hemlock Bluffs will be supervised and implemented by trained individuals with the NC State Parks, with logistical support from Town staff.

The notification window of the burn may be only hours, depending on weather conditions.  Citizens who wish to obtain more detailed information on the burn can contact 311 by dialing 311 or (919) 469-4000 if outside of Cary. You can also email 311@carync.gov.

Upcoming Trail Improvements

Hemlock Bluffs trails are being updated! The preserve trails were constructed in the 1990s and have seen plenty of use over that thirty-year period. Staff are working on several different projects to ensure our trail system will continue to be safe and sustainable – for both hikers and the preserve. We are partnering with volunteer groups and NC State Parks to work on trail rehabilitation and maintenance, trail reroutes, and structure updates.
Additionally, hikers might notice some changes. Sections of trail are being converted to natural surface trail instead of mulched trail. While mulching some trail sections will still occur, preserve staff will be working to ensure all of Hemlock Bluffs trails are up to industry standard using sustainable practices. This way, our trails will be open and accessible for another thirty years!
