The Cary Fire Department hires firefighters based on staffing and organizational needs. We seek individuals who not only have the technical capacity to perform the job but also will complement and strengthen our team.

Applications for employment as a firefighter are accepted only during open recruitment periods. The Human Resources department maintains an updated list of job openings. If you wish to be considered for this position with the Town of Cary, please fill out an electronic job interest card online, and you will receive an email notifying you when firefighter recruitment begins. You may apply online at that time.

You may contact the Human Resources Department at (919) 469-4070 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Human Resources Department is located at Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy St.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age by date of hire
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record ("active" status)

Persons highly motivated to work in the firefighting field are a plus!

Academy

Training academies are based off department and new-hire training needs. The typical academy for new hires will last around 10 months and will run on a 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. schedule.

Physical Agility Test

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to take and pass a physical agility test (P.A.T.). An optional practice P.A.T. will be scheduled for interested persons. You must sign a release of liability to participate in both the practice and actual P.A.T. This release of liability form must be filled out when submitting your application. The P.A.T. typically consists of various fire ground related tasks, such as walking up stairs; carrying tools; dragging hose lines; using a maul; a pulling and pushing activity; deploying a ladder; and crawling through a tight, dark space, all while wearing a weighted vest. 

Drug Test/Background Check

A drug test and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification, and credit history review) will be required prior to employment.
