Location: 309 N. West Street
Built: ca. 1925
Designated in 2025

The Levie and Clarence Braswell House, located at 309 N. West, is situated within a historically residential neighborhood just northwest of downtown. Built ca. 1925, the house retains nearly all of its original character-defining features, including the asymmetrical front façade formed by the nested gables, and building features evocative of Craftsman-style houses including eave brackets, wooden shake siding in the gable ends, battered porch posts on brick piers, exposed rafter tails, and weatherboard siding. Interior details such as original oak hardwood flooring, two-panel doors with crystal doorknobs, built-in cabinetry, and a coal-burning fireplace that has been sensitively converted, reflect the quality craftsmanship typical of the era. Interestingly, the home also features salvaged wood from a 1920s schoolhouse in Benson, North Carolina, to repair siding and flooring in a historically appropriate manner.

Situated just southeast of the historic railroad lines that helped shape Cary’s early growth, the house serves as a rare physical reminder of the town's 1920s residential expansion during a period of improved rail connectivity. Once part of a cohesive neighborhood of similar bungalows, most of the Braswell House’s contemporaries have been demolished and replaced with modern construction, making its continued existence particularly meaningful. Its mature trees and original setting further enhance the house’s integrity of location and feeling.
