Walking
Pedestrians should always use sidewalks whenever they are available. If no sidewalks are available, pedestrians should walk on the shoulder of the roadway and facing traffic.
When mapping walking routes, consider incorporating greenways and trails alongside sidewalks.
Bicycling/Scooters
When riding on the street, bicyclists and electric scooter riders should ride with the flow of traffic. If riding a bike or scooter on the sidewalk, please be cautious of and yield to pedestrians. It's recommended to always wear a helmet; it's the safest way to ride a bike and an e-scooter.
Bicyclists should ensure their tires are properly inflated and monitor tread wear. Check brakes regularly for responsiveness. When possible, ride with others as this increases visibility and can be helpful in case of an emergency or flat tire.
Scooters are meant for one passenger and should travel at a safe speed. When parking scooters, please keep sidewalks clear. Ensure they do not block sidewalks, other passageways for pedestrians, or entryways to businesses or buildings. In addition, do not block sidewalk dining areas, bus stops, handicap ramps, driveways, or benches. Leave at least five feet for pedestrians.
Both walkers and bicyclists/scooter riders should:
- Be aware of their surroundings
- Dress in light colored and properly reflective clothing
- Use a flashlight in dark areas and wear reflective material when out near dusk or dawn
- Carry current photo identification
- Take a cellphone for emergencies
Driving
Don't just look for other cars—be aware of foot and bicycle traffic as well. Stop for pedestrians and share the road with cyclists.
