Cary collects and analyses traffic count data for a variety of reasons including:TrafficIcon_Data

Traffic data typically consists of intersection turning movement counts conducted over a 16-hour period, or 3-day speed, volume, and classification counts at a point along a given road segment.  Traffic counts are collected either by Cary staff or a contractor based on the specific needs of the traffic count.

Traffic counts conducted by Cary staff are available from Miovision through the portal below.  This information is updated as new traffic counts become available.  Additional traffic count data may be available for review by contacting Cary’s Advanced Traffic Management Center staff via Cary311.

The NC Department of Transportation also has turning movement and daily traffic volumes available on its website and through the statewide Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) mapping application.

Another tool is the review and analysis of crash data.  Cary’s Traffic Engineering group partners with Cary Police and the NC Department of Transportation on most crash analyses, making use of resources available to each of our teams to provide a holistic approach.

Crash data is available from Cary Police using the Open Data Portal.

Advanced Transportation Analytics

Cary’s traffic data collection continues to evolve in line with the transportation industry and has increasingly adapted to using newer methods to analyze traffic patterns.  Vendor-provided data platforms that are readily available to roadway planners and engineers utilize anonymized vehicle information to depict macroscopic trends in the transportation network.  This data, known as probe data, provides aggregated information representing vehicle movements over weeks or months, allowing Cary’s Traffic Engineers to discern patterns in vehicle volume and speed.

Tools such as these provide real-time or very recent information to Cary staff that can be used to prioritize resources for traffic improvements, adjustments to signal timing, or further investigation and study.
