The 2025 Long Range Water Resources Plan (LRWRP) summarizes both historic patterns & future forecasts of Cary's water supply & demand. Cary provides treated water to the Towns of Apex, Morrisville, RDU International Airport, and the Wake County portion Research Triangle Park (RTP). As such, the LRWRP update was developed in coordination with these partners.
Cary's main water supply is B. Everett Jordan Lake. Part of the lake's storage capacity is designated for water supply, and the State of North Carolina's Division of Water Resources, NCDEQ, allocates that water supply storage based on applications by water suppliers. As of March 2017, our allocations is 46.2 percent of water supply storage, or 46.2 million gallons per day (MGD) average annual day supply.
The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility (CAWTF) treats water from Jordan Lake for Cary, Apex, Morrisville, and RTP South. The facility has a maximum daily capacity of 56 MGD, to support peak day demands. Cary also have mutual support agreements with Durham, Holly Springs and Raleigh to purchase water through our water system interconnections, if needed.
See our most recent Water Resources Year in Review to see how we're using water relative to our allocation and treatment capacities. Planning ahead helps ensure current and future citizens can rely on high-quality, safe, affordable and reliable water and wastewater service.
